	Highligted Entertainment Event The Virginia Symphony Orchestra at William and Mary Hall Client Challenge: Equal the acoustic quality of Chrysler Hall in Norfolk and produce Mahler’s 8th Symphony with a one hundred piece orchestra, vocal soloists, offstage brass and a 400 voice combined choir in a basketball arena as a one-night keynote of the 2012 Virginia Arts Festival. RCI Systems Solution: Our Production Sales Staff approached the challenge as any other symphony in an outdoor or non-concert hall environment with close miking of all instruments and flown line array speakers in a highQ design covering the raked seating of the half-house arena. Using a PM5D and DSP5D RCI's Engineer employed 90 microphones including 20 Schoeps MK4/CMC6, 12 MKH40, and 20 AKG C393 in the strings and woodwinds. Particular attention was paid to the array of keyboards that are integral to the piece. The 8 vocal soloists, to include one working only from the audience area were given Shure UHF-R transmitters with beta87 capsules run through Dan Dugan automixing. Our Sales staff approached the choir challenge in the highly reverberant space with flown DPA 4041 mics suspended over the 12 levels of chorus riser resulting in balance during the sections where not all the choir was in play and thunder when all the voices were at work together. Maestro JoAnn Falletta exclaimed “this sounds excellent!” from the seating area at the end of the rehearsal. The performance was declared “natural and transparent”.
